Denim Maria

The Woman Behind the Tours

Urban Planner. Storyteller. Guide.

Hi, I’m Maria.

I first arrived in Amsterdam in 2018 for a semester abroad and felt at home almost instantly. It wasn’t just the canals or the bikes. It was the boldness of the city, the way freedom and careful design exist side by side.

I’ve traveled through 45 countries collecting stories, but Amsterdam is where I chose to pause and build a life.

With a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s in urban planning, and experience working alongside architects on projects across the city, I’ve learned to read Amsterdam beyond its postcard beauty. I see streets as stories, buildings as decisions, and neighborhoods as living debates.

My tours weave together the voices of women, Jewish communities, migrants, and planners — people who shaped Amsterdam through resilience, creativity, and vision.

I guide with curiosity and humor, connecting you not just to places, but to the ideas behind them.

Amsterdam is not just beautiful. It is intentional.
Let’s explore it together.

Approach & Values

Rooted in Place

I believe the city itself does the heavy lifting. Streets, buildings, and forgotten corners of Amsterdam are not scenery, but primary sources.

Stories of People

Big history becomes meaningful only when filtered through human lives. We focus on individuals — their choices, contradictions, and everyday courage.

Curious Dialogue

We exchange perspectives, ask questions and laugh. Tours are conversations shaped by curiosity, critical thinking, and a healthy distrust of oversimplified narratives.

Mindful Engagement

This is slow tourism, by design. We look closely, ask better questions, sketch when words fall short, and give attention the time it deserves.

Inclusive & Accessible Experiences

My tours are designed for different ages, cultural backgrounds, and levels of prior knowledge — including families and curious first-timers. Complexity is welcome.

Ethical Craftsmanship

We handle history with care, not spectacle. Small groups, thoughtful routes, and rigorous research ensure quality over quantity, always.

what people say

Erica, Iowa

“Pure joy from start to finish! Thank you for your kindness, patience, and wonderful storytelling. The tour was incredibly informative and so much fun — we all appreciated your guidance and warmth throughout the day.”

Lisa, New Hampshire

“Hi Maria, Lisa from the tour yesterday.  Wanted to once again thank you for an amazing tour. We had a wonderful time and were truly amazed by the depth of your knowledge. It was incredibly impressive. You have a real gift for teaching and explaining, and this was by far the best tour I have ever experienced. Thank you so much.”

Lea, London

“Thank you so much for the tour and for your extra patience with our kids — it meant a lot to us. We followed two of your recommendations afterward, and both were perfect: steak frites for lunch and apple pie for dessert. Such a lovely day!”

Andrew, Austin

“Dear Maria, thank you for today. Our kids can’t stop talking about the drawing exercise in the museum. We really appreciated your flexibility with time as well — it made the experience even more special. Thank you for such a wonderful and memorable tour!”

FAQ

  • Not at all.
You don’t need any background knowledge — just curiosity. I translate complex topics into clear, engaging stories connected to the streets we walk or cycle through.

  • Private tours allow space for questions, detours, pauses, and personal interests. The tour adapts to you — not the other way around. You can also choose custom pick-up and drop-off locations, so the tour fits naturally into your day.

  • The price is €200-340 for 1–4 people.

Each additional person costs €40, up to a maximum of 10 participants.

A private guided tour, thoughtful storytelling, local knowledge, and a carefully designed route. A list of personalized recommendations for your group according to your interests.

Tickets, bike rental, food, or drinks are not included unless mentioned explicitly.

  • This tour looks beyond a single figure or narrative. While Anne Frank is part of the story, she is not the only way into Jewish Amsterdam. We focus on different Jewish Amsterdammers — community leaders, workers, intellectuals, entrepreneurs, and even a Jewish mayor — and how their ideas and actions shaped the city as a whole.

The emphasis is on presence, contribution, and continuity, alongside loss — a fuller, more honest picture of Jewish life in Amsterdam.

  • Simply click the “Book a Tour” button and select your preferred date and experience. Once your booking is confirmed, you’ll receive all practical details by email. To ensure your preferred date, booking at least 48 hours in advance is recommended. Last-minute inquiries are welcome, and I’ll do my best to accommodate when my schedule allows.

  • You’re very welcome to bring your own bike — it’s often the easiest and most comfortable option. If not, no worries at all. I’ll recommend a reliable local bike rental with great city bikes and family-friendly options, including tandems, children’s bikes, and child seats for kids up to 20 kg.
I’ll also help you with locking and unlocking the bikes — in Amsterdam, that’s an art in itself.

  • Yes.
If you’re interested in specific topics — architecture, cycling infrastructure, Jewish history, community projects, or contemporary urban challenges — I’ll adapt the focus and pace.
This is especially popular with professionals, students, and returning visitors.

  • Tours are available in English and Russian. Ukrainian is available upon request too.

  • Comfortable shoes, curiosity, and layers.
Amsterdam is famous for its wind, so even on sunny days it’s smart to bring a light jacket, scarf, or extra layer. Sunglasses are often useful too — the light reflects beautifully off the water. A bottle of water is always handy.

  • Amsterdam is charming — and a little imperfect. You’ll encounter cobblestones, narrow sidewalks, and the occasional bike whizzing by. Some areas can be a bit tight for strollers or wheelchairs, but I always stay alert, keep the group together, and make sure we move through the city safely and comfortably.
If you have specific accessibility needs, feel free to reach out in advance — private tours allow for flexibility, and I’m always happy to adapt where possible.

  • For cycling tours, we ride mainly in Amsterdam-Noord and Amsterdam Zuid, where the streets are more spacious, traffic is lighter, and bike paths are clearly separated from pedestrians and cars. It’s one of the easiest and most relaxed areas to cycle in the city.
I’ll give a short introduction at the start, explain how things work on Dutch bike paths, and guide you through wide, open areas where it’s easy to orient yourself. I’ve had guests join with little to no prior cycling experience — so it really comes down to your comfort level. I’ll be there to support you, set the pace, and cheer you on along the way 🙂
If you’re still unsure, just reach out — I’ll advise honestly.

  • Yes — families are very welcome. I’m a parent myself, so I know how different every child is.

Some tours, especially those about Jewish history, do include conversations about the Holocaust. These are handled gently and without graphic detail, but they can still feel heavy, depending on a child’s age and sensitivity.

Tours can last up to two hours of walking or three hours of cycling, which may be a bit much for younger children. You know your family best, and I trust that completely.

Because all tours are private, we can always slow down, take breaks, or adjust along the way. If you’re unsure, just reach out — I’m happy to think it through together.
