Jewish Amsterdam: Beyond Remembrance
A journey through ideas, people and heritage that shaped Mokum
On this tour, we look beyond monuments and tragedy to explore how migration, faith, commerce, and ideas
helped shape Amsterdam itself. What did it mean to belong here, to negotiate rights, build community, and influence culture and debate?
In thoughtful connection with today’s Jewish community, we reflect on continuity as much as rupture. This layered exploration is for those who seek depth, context, and a deeper understanding of how remembrance shapes the city we share today.

It’s for curious visitors who enjoy personal, reflective storytelling and want to understand Jewish Amsterdam as a living, creative, civic force, rather than a list of sights.
You’ll walk slowly, observe the streets and buildings, and reflect on history, memory, and continuity. The tour is about insight and conversation, not spectacle.

FAQ
Families are very welcome. Some stories touch on the Holocaust and history of survival, but we avoid graphic details. Private format allows us to adjust pace, stops, and focus. I’m happy to discuss in advance which parts are best suited for children.
Not at all.
The history of Jewish life in Amsterdam is deeply interwoven with the city’s cultural and architectural development. The tour is open to anyone who approaches this history with curiosity and respect.
Comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate layers, water, and optionally a notebook or camera. Amsterdam’s streets can be cobbled in places.
We move through both familiar landmarks and quieter places of Jewish life: the Portuguese Synagogue (Esnoga), the area around Artis, Henri Polakstraat, the Mozes and Aäron Church, the Holocaust Museum, and the former residence of the Ashkenazi Jewish community.
Each stop connects place and story, showing how Jewish history is woven into the everyday city — often in ways you wouldn’t expect.
The tour is calm, respectful, and engaging. While it touches on important and sometimes emotional moments, it is suitable for families and those new to Jewish history, with a gentle pace and thoughtful storytelling.
This tour looks beyond a single figure or narrative. While Anne Frank is part of the story, she is not the only way into Jewish Amsterdam. We focus on different Jewish Amsterdammers — community leaders, workers, intellectuals, entrepreneurs, and even a Jewish mayor — and how their ideas and actions shaped the city as a whole.
The emphasis is on presence, contribution, and continuity, alongside loss — a fuller, more honest picture of Jewish life in Amsterdam.
English, Russian, and Ukrainian.
We see both landmarks and hidden corners. The private format allows us to linger at a place that interests you, pause for reflection, or adjust based on your interests.
The tour focuses on key Jewish landmarks, neighbourhoods, and stories from the outside. Visiting sites or synagogues can be discussed in advance — I’m happy to help with ticket purchase. One ticket covers the main Jewish sites and museums in the neighbourhood. To fully explore the interiors, we recommend allowing an additional half day, either before or after the tour.
The tour lasts around 2 hours at a relaxed pace and covers 1.8 km (just over a mile). We take regular stops, and the route can be adjusted to suit your comfort level.
