Oud-Zuid: Architecture, Art, Refined Living
A journey through planning, memory and everyday resistance
Oud-Zuid is one of Amsterdam’s most carefully planned neighborhoods — and one of its most contradictory.
Wide avenues, elegant villas, green parks, and cultural institutions tell a story of order, prosperity, and long-term vision. Yet just beneath that surface lie stories of protest, resistance, reuse, and negotiation — between money and ideals, power and creativity, control and freedom.
This cycling tour invites you to look at Oud-Zuid not as a “finished” neighborhood, but as an ongoing conversation. We’ll explore how capital, culture, and counterculture have shaped this area over more than a century — and how those negotiations are still visible in the streets we bike through today.

Comfortable clothes and layers are key. Amsterdam’s weather changes quickly — a light jacket, scarf, or extra layer is always handy. Sunglasses and a bottle of water are recommended.
Families are welcome, ideally for children 12+. Because it’s private, we can adapt pace, take breaks, or adjust the focus. The tour touches on history and culture, not heavy topics, so it’s easy to follow and enjoyable for teenagers.
We ride in most weather conditions. I’ll adapt stops and timing if needed. Amsterdam is best explored rain or shine, and bikes are surprisingly forgiving!
